Mike Schleyhahn, President of San Diego Fluid System Technologies, is passionate about many things, including his family, his associates and his community. Through Junior Achievement of San Diego and Father Joe's Villages, he turns this passion for the community into action, and enables others to do the same.
"I was introduced to Junior Achievement of San Diego during a tour of JA BizTown with my executive group, and I told myself, "I need to be involved in this." JA BizTown itself and the children we met that day really struck me. The kids were so proud and impressive as they talked to us about what they learned—I could feel the impact that this program had made on their lives."
Junior Achievement of San Diego reaches 53,000 students with financial literacy programs. The confidence that is built through JA programs plays a key role in building their future success.
He became a member of the Board of Directors soon after his first visit. Through his involvement, associates at San Diego FST have participated in a number of fundraising events for JA in recent years. 2015 marked the third year that San Diego FST was the presenting sponsor for the JA Golf Classic, an idea that Schleyhahn helped bring to life in 2013. Associates volunteered at the tournament, procured auction items and golfed to help JA exceed their fundraising goals. They also formed teams for the JA Bowl-a-Thon in May, raising donations to bowl and compete with each other for a great cause.
For those in the community who need extra help to live independently and rejoin the workforce, San Diego FST is a proud supporter of Father Joe's Villages. Father Joe's is San Diego's largest homeless services provider, supporting those who are struggling with housing, meals, childcare, medical and employment services. Schleyhahn is currently on the Executive Committee, is Chairman of the Development Committee and participated in the Search Committee for the new CEO for Father Joe's Villages. This level of involvement inspires others to participate in volunteer and fundraising opportunities as well.
The associates at San Diego FST have participated in events for Father Joe's for several years. The company sponsors a donation truck that travels across San Diego to collect items for the Villages. For the fifth year, Quality Manager Mark Baran will gather a team of associates and their families to raise donations and run/ walk together in the Thanksgiving Day 5k, one of the most well-known annual 5k events in San Diego. The company has also participated as presenting sponsor of the Father Joe's Villages Tower-a-Thon fundraiser.
In 2014, another high profile charitable initiative found its way to San Diego FST, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The company was challenged by Rod Fallow and his team at Swagelok Northern California, and responded enthusiastically with 10 associates taking the challenge. Donations from associates for this event went to The Rockfords, a family in Missouri, currently facing the difficult impact of ALS.
